Sprinting performance capacity evolves throughout life via growth, maturation, training, and aging. The age of peak performance in world-class sprinters is typically 25–26 years old. However, the concept of training age needs to be considered when assessing the age of peak performance for sprinters. Athletes who start with specialized training at a young age tend to reach their peak performance at an earlier age than their competition who specialize somewhat later. A study completed by the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance reported that the very best athletes generally display greater improvement in the years just preceding the age of peak performance compared with their lower-performing competitors. For example, the world’s all-time best male and female sprinters improved by an average of 8% by the time they reached 18 years of age. It is critical to develop the proper sprinting mechanics at a young age, preferably 9-11 years of age, to receive the full benefits before the age of 18.
