D1 Training Scottsdale at 13402 N Scottsdale Rd, Ste B-150 offers softball performance training for athletes ages 9 through college and professional competition. The program develops the athletic pieces behind the game: a powerful, efficient rotational sequence for hitting and throwing, first-step speed for infield and outfield reads, lateral movement for defensive range, and acceleration out of the box. Bret Lockett and Cravon Gillespie coach sprint mechanics, strength, and movement progressions in a performance setting that complements skill instruction, team practice, and the demands of a tournament schedule.

Softball asks athletes to express speed and power in short, repeatable plays. An infielder reacts, shuffles, fields, and throws in seconds. An outfielder covers ground from a first read. A hitter accelerates from the box and changes direction on the bases. Our training breaks those demands into trainable qualities: acceleration mechanics, lateral movement, rotational intent, and strength that supports efficient positions. The result is a performance plan that fits the way softball is actually played rather than a generic conditioning circuit.
For youth athletes, the priority is learning reliable movement patterns before loading them heavily. Nine- to eleven-year-olds work on coordination, sprint starts, landing, and simple rotational throws; middle-school athletes can progress into more deliberate strength, lateral, and base-running work as they demonstrate control. High-school, college, and professional athletes receive progressions based on their training history, position, calendar, and current practice or competition volume. Catchers, pitchers, position players, and multi-sport athletes do not need identical sessions, so their weekly emphasis is adjusted accordingly.
At the assessment, we establish a practical softball performance baseline. Electronic timing can capture a 10-yard acceleration and home-to-first time; a lateral shuttle and 5-10-5 drill show direction-change capacity; standing broad jump and countermovement jump provide lower-body power references; and a medicine-ball rotational throw helps guide rotational-power programming. We also observe squat, hinge, landing, and single-leg patterns to choose appropriate progressions. Retests are scheduled around the athlete’s season and workload so the data is useful without turning training into constant testing.
Softball skill coaches handle hitting, fielding, pitching, and throwing mechanics. Lockett Performance supplies the physical preparation that can support those skills: stronger positions, better acceleration mechanics, controlled lateral movement, and an organized training dose when the calendar is busy. Families and athletes can use documented tests to see the starting point, discuss training priorities, and communicate a complete athletic profile alongside game film when pursuing high-school, college, or professional opportunities.
Softball athletes at D1 Training Scottsdale begin with sport-relevant testing selected for their age and training background: electronic 10-yard and home-to-first timing, lateral shuttle or 5-10-5 change-of-direction testing, jump measures, medicine-ball rotational throws, and a movement-quality review. We record the baseline and schedule retests around practices, games, pitching, catching, and travel. Numbers inform the plan; they are not a substitute for softball skill evaluation.
